Edward John Bartlett was a prime mover in the development of lead mining
in North East Wales in the 1870s and 1880s. He was chairman or
secretary of over a dozen mining companies. He and his friends were
responsible for the injection of much needed capital at a time when the
area was undergoing a severe economic recession.
One of his pet projects was the amalgamation of a group of mines (namely
Aberduna, Coed Cynric, Coed y Fedw and Colomendy) to form Denbighshire
Consolidated Mines Ltd (1872-1882). The main mineral vein of which
passes under land now owned by the Colomendy Environmental Studies
Centre where a safety issue has arisen following the recent heavy rains.
Unfortunately the mine plans were not filed with the Home Office on
abandonment nor are there any in either the Denbighshire or the
Flintshire Record Offices. Does anyone on the list know of the
whereabouts of the plans or of any plans that accompanied the later
mining prospectuses? (Denbighshire Consolidated Mines Ltd was
restructured as Aberduna Lead Mines Ltd (1882-4) and Mold District Lead
Company Ltd (1885-7).)
Finally does anyone know if any of Bartlett's papers survive?
