There is a picture of a sinking crew in "Ashington - a history in
Photographs" by Bill Harrison ISBN 0 9513027 7 9 - page 32 showing
the start of the shaft at Ellington. (in which only an apparent
supervisor is wearing a suit, though one of the men is working in a
waistcoat). There were also at least two Coal Board films made of
shaft sinking that I can remember (we are trying to get permission to
convert them to video). In them I remember seeing the more
traditional oilskin type of jackets - which would be needed because
of the wet conditions in many shafts.
