This is something I feel very bitter about. I went through most of my
PhD with no lending rights anywhere (Greenwich libraries refuse to get
anything academic and take six months to borrow anything from other
libraries). Eventually I only had access to the British Library and the
City Guildhall - even the Science Museum Library became part of Imperial
College and although its free and they let you in, there is often a
tussle with the doorman to get inside. I used to lie and lie and lie to
get past the doorman at Queen Mary and Thames Poly just to be allowed to
look at books on the shelf......
................ in my less sane moments I think it is part of a
movement by people with academic jobs to keep 'amateurs' away from the
possiblity of doing effective research........
