I'm don't know about any connection with the GWR, but I believe that the Great
Western Colliery company was originally set up to work a pit in Bristol I'm
not sure about the facts, but there was certainly a Great Western Colliery in
St Phillip's (the site is somewhere between Temple Meads station and the
Showcase Cinema, but there is nothing to be seen today) which, after being
closed for some time was reopened by Bedminster, Easton, Kingswood & Parkfield
Collieries Ltd for a short period during the 1890s. The registered office of
the company was also in Bristol.
