Can anybody help with what might appear to be a somewhat strange request
concerning the shrub Fuschia?
During the course of a recent meeting about conservation of the Man Engine
House in Allihies, Co. Cork, somebody mentioned that there is, apparently, a
folklore tradition in that region which associates mining and Fuschia. The
tradition holds that fuschia is associated with Cornish miners who worked in
that region, perhaps bringing it with them from Cornwall [I somehow doubt
that, as Fuschia grows widely in Ireland, and was used extensively as a dye
for colouring traditional woolen garments]. I have never heard mention of
such an association, but undertook to make some enquiries - hence this
posting. So, does anybody on the list know of any association between
Fuschia and miners in Cornwall; or between the shrub and Cornish miners
anywhere else in the world?
Thanks for any help,
John Morris.
