I've had an enquiry from a non-member on the use of water balanced lifts in
mining - something which has been touched on in past discussion on this
list. What the student requires is -
>any details, drawings, or information relating to water balance
>lifts, or details of any authoritative
>publications
Water balances were used in collieries, particularly in the South Wales
coalfield, although I'm also aware of one used in an anthracite mine at
Bideford in north Devon in the 1850s. Is anyone aware of work by Cadw or
RCAHMW on surviving structures or associated pitwork?
