Dear Fernando,
You may do well to look at the spatial relationships of mining camps in the
Deadwood area of South Dakota's Black Hills. A contact for you would be:
Jim Wilson,
Historic Preservation Officer
City of Deadwood
Deadwood, South Dakota
57732
I recently finished a survey of the area using local historic newspapers and
encountered 15 different mining camps that are now encompassed by the Village
of Deadwood and the city of Lead.
Starting on the north and following Whitewood creek would be:
Two Bit Gulch
Mountain City
Montana City (of which there were two, ours in Lawrence County and another in
Pennington County, both in the same time frame)
Fountain City
Elizabethtown
China town
Deadwood
Pluma
Gold Run
Lead
Going up Deadwood Gulch from City Creek would be:
Deadwood
Gayville
Central City
Anchor City
Oro
Lead.
There is a significant amount of readily available data concerning school
districts, voting precincts, miners unions, ethnic enclaves, and of course,
land status data.
Perhaps the most single most research motivating item presently available to
you is the Deadwood Historical Newspaper Data base. This can be accessed on
the Internet through the South Dakota State Library, an extremely user
friendly organization.
Best of Luck, and happy fishing
