Sally,
wood out-gasses acetic acid (as part of its decay process), which attacks
lead. This can be quite a problem in sealed museum displays and lead
artifacts should never be placed in wooden cabinets. I don't know if pine is
any worse than other wood and if the acid given off varies from species to
species but Oak and tanic acid spring to mind.
