Whilst on a touring holiday in Derbyshire around 1974
I called in to a small mining company some where along
LONG RAKE.
It appeared to be a family concern .The owner kindly
showed me round the works including the head of a mine
shaft where fluorspar was or had been extracted.
He was using a vibrating water tray or table
collecting
various minerals in evenly spaced sloping boxes - The
heaviest at the bottom The minerals including lead
which was bagged up in small strong bags and sent away
to be melted down.
Next was a heavy fawn coloured rock which he told me
was used to lubricate north sea oil rig drilling heads
after one or two more minerals the remaining spoil was
washed and sold as Derbyshire spar for exterior
weather coating houses and other buildings
At the time he gave me small samples to take home.
