Screening Dr Bobbie Farsides, Senior Lecturer, Centre of
Medical Law and Ethics, Kings College London.
Biographical Profile
Bobbie Farsides is Senior Lecturer in Medical Ethics at the
Centre of Medical Law and Ethics KCL. Her background is in
social science and philosophy which she studied to Phd
level at LSE. In the past her research interests have
primarily been around ethical issues in cancer and
palliative care, but she has recently completed a research
project on antenatal screening, and hopes to develop her
interest in 'prenatal ethics' further in the future.
Seminar Synopsis
The seminar paper will draw on the work of the project
'Cross currents in Genetics and Ethics around the Millennium
1999-2001' a multidisciplinary qualitative research project
funded by the Wellcome Trust bioethics Initiative. The
project was carried out together with two sociologists,
Prisicilla Alderson and Clare Williams. Seventy health
care professionals from two hospitals were interviewed
about their views on the ethical issues arising from their
involvement in screening, eleven multi-professional
discussion groups were then held at which they shared their
views with colleagues facilitated by a health care
ethicist. The paper will outline the main findings from the
data.
