Research Associate

Applications are invited for a  Research Associate to join an ESRC
funded project for three years to work with Prof John Pickstone on the
recent history of a medical technology.

The project is part of the ESRC initiative on Innovative Health Care
Technologies. It concerns the development of artificial hips,
especially after the initial inventions. It offers a unique
opportunity to study R and D in a key medical technology, using
written sources and oral history to analyse the interactions between
doctors, patients, health service managers and the companies which
developed and manufactured the devices and instruments.

The primary disciplinary orientation is history of medicine, but we
are collaborating with a health economist, and with social scientists
specialising in innovation. The appointee will have postgraduate
research experience, probably a completed PhD, in history of science,
technology and medicine, or an associated discipline. The post
requires high-level skills in research, organisation and writing. It
will involve many interviews, and workshops with interested parties.

Salary will be in the range stlg16775 to stlg25213 per annum (under review
from 1 April).

Particulars of Appointment of Research Associate : Centre for the
History of Science, Technology and Medicine and Wellcome Unit for the
History of Medicine

The University invites applications for the post of Research Associate
in CHSTM.  The post is available from 2 April 2001 (or as soon as
possible thereafter) for a period of up to three years.

General particulars of appointment to research posts are attached and
details of the project and the post.

Salary will be in the range stlg16775 - stlg25213 per annum (under review
from 1 April 2001) with the starting salary depending on previous
experience.  (An applicant who is still to be awarded his/her PhD may
be initially appointed on Research Assistant Grade 1B stlg16775 to stlg18731
per annum until the PhD is confirmed).

 GENERAL PARTICULARS OF APPOINTMENT OF RESEARCH STAFF

1.All appointments are made subject to the Charter, statutes,
ordinances, regulations and by laws of the University for the time
being in force.

2.Appointments of research staff are tenable for such period or
periods as the Council of the University may determine in each case.
They are subject to the conditions of termination of appointments
contained in paragraph 3 of these general particulars.

3.The appointments of members of the research staff are terminable by
three months' notice in writing on either side.

4.The duties of each member of the research staff will include the
following:

(a)To undertake such duties, appropriate to the post, as may be
required by his or her Head of School or Department.

(b)To observe the Charter, statutes, ordinances, regulations and by
laws of the University for the time being in force. In addition,
members of the University staff holding appointments which require
them to perform part or all of their duties on premises not under the
control of the University authorities must observe the rules,
regulations and by laws of the relevant authority at those premises.

5.The University participates in the Universities' Superannuation
Scheme, a nationwide pension scheme for academic and related staff in
universities. Benefits are related to final salary and contributions
are currently 6.35% of salary while employers contribute at 14%.
Transfers in can be arranged from other schemes.

Membership of USS is voluntary but the University hopes that all
eligible staff (normally anyone employed for at least six months) will
wish to join.

Further particulars about USS are available from the Pensions Section
of the Personnel Office, who will contact all new staff eligible to
join the scheme on their arrival at the University.

Staff who are already in FSSU may retain their FSSU membership on
taking up appointment at the University.  NHSPS membership may be
retained if the new appointment is in the Medical School.

6.There are no specified hours of work for members of the research
staff, but (unless otherwise stated in the attached details of the
appointment) the appointments of such members are full time and the
member may not undertake any continuous engagement or other paid
employment with other parties outside the University without the
previous special permission of the appropriate University authority.

7. Members of staff are entitled to reasonable holidays which may be
taken by arrangement with the appropriate University authorities. All
holidays so taken shall be with full pay.

8. The University has adopted a Family Policy which makes provision
for paid special leave, paternity leave and job sharing. In addition
the University operates, jointly with the Manchester Metropolitan
University, a 100 place Nursery for the children (aged 6 months   5
years) of staff and students of the two institutions. Further
information is available from the Personnel Office.

9. Arrangements as to sickness and sick pay are at the discretion for
the appropriate University authority, which considers each case on its
merits and may make an `ex gratia' payment of an amount or at a rate
to be determined in each case for the whole or part of a period of
absence through sickness. The current practice is that members of
staff normally receive full salary during the first six months of such
absence and the position is then reviewed. All members of staff are
required to notify their Head of Department of all periods of absence
through sickness.

10. The University may be prepared to make a grant towards the
expenses involved in the removal of the successful candidate's
household effects made necessary as a result of taking up duties in
the University. The grant will not include storage costs, legal fees,
estate agent's fees or other expenses involved in buying or selling a
house.

Job Specification

To work with Prof JV Pickstone and collaborators on a 3 year ESRC
project on Innovative Health Care Technologies.

To use initiative, organisational capacity and analytical skills in
researching the recent history of artificial hips.

To organise data sets, interviews and workshops for the project.

To help maintain relations with the consultant economist and other
members of the advisory board that will be established for the
project, with the various professional and user groups whose input we
seek, and with the other research groups on the ESRC initiative.

To take a share in the writing of papers and a monograph (some of the
products will be co-authored, others will be individually authored,
including papers by the researcher); and otherwise to help disseminate
the results of the project

To contribute to the teaching and administration of CHSTM, within the
rules for ESRC researchers


Person Specification

Essential
A good first degree in a related area

Post Graduate training, preferably a PhD, in History of Science,
Technology and Medicine, or a related discipline.

Demonstrable skills of a high order - in research methods, writing,
oral presentations, and work organisation.

Good Interpersonal skills - for conducting interviews, workshops etc.

Skills in the use of word-processors, electronic data bases etc

Wide, cross-disciplinary interests and a readiness to contribute to
the life and work of CHSTM and the university more generally

Desirable

Publications (actual or potential) in HSTM or a related area.

Previous experience of oral history and of researching and writing
about technologies and/or medicine

Some experience of quantitative methods, including data- analysis
programmes

The ambition to make a career in HSTM or a related area, as an
academic or researcher

A commitment to the public utility of historical and social studies of
medicine in general, and to the wide dissemination of the results of
this project.
