CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers are solicited on the theme of:
Rewriting, Remaking, Refashioning:
Italian Culture in Early Modern English Drama
They will be published in a collection of essays edited by Michele
Marrapodi planned as a sequel to _Shakespeare's Italy: Functions of
Italian Locations in Renaissance Drama_ (Manchester: Manchester UP, 1993;
revised ed., 1997). Essays will explore the structural influence of
Italian literature, culture and society at large on Shakespeare and early
modern drama as regards language and characterization, sources and
intertextuality, dramatic theory and genres, etc. Particularly welcome
will be papers which consider early modern Italian novelle and theatre as
direct, indirect and deep sources for, as well as analogues and paralogues
to, the construction of Shakespeare's drama, particularly in the comedies,
romances, and other Italianate plays. Other cultural transactions, such
as travel and courtesy books, the arts, fencing, dance, and fashion, will
also be considered. Special emphasis will be given to the manner in which
early modern English dramatists adapted Italian materials to suit their
theatrical agendas, creating new forms, and stretching the Renaissance
practice of _contaminatio_ to achieve, even unconsciously, a process of
rewriting, remaking, and refashioning of alien cultures.
The deadline is October 2002. Contributors will include Ronnie Mulryne,
Keir Elam, Robert S. Miola, Murray J. Levith, Francis Barasch and Michael
J. Redmond. Proposed contributions should be presented according to the
MLA style sheet. The length of an article should not exceed 7,000/8,000
words. The title of papers together with a one-page abstract must be sent
by January 2002 to the editor:
