Creativity in Question
An international, multidisciplinary conference
Edinburgh University Conference Centre, 22-24 March 2002
Conference Announcement and First Call for Papers
What do we know about creativity? Is it an act, a process, a concept, an
ideological tactic, or all of these? Why do we affirm and celebrate
creativity? Is creativity 'merely cultural' or does it need to be understood
in the context of wider social, economic and political processes? Is
creativity generating new forms of mediation and expression, even new
economies? Where do our ideas about creativity come from and how have they
developed?
These questions have been prompted by the increased visibility of talk about
creativity within the public domain. Arguably, creativity has become
generalised across numerous spheres of social life. Organisations even claim
to value the creativity of their workers and creativity is regarded as the
solution to any problem. Creativity has even become a matter of policy, even
consensus.
So what's going on with creativity?
The conference aims to be interdisciplinary and to achieve this we welcome
contributions from across the humanities and social sciences. There is no
reason why a conference on creativity should not try to be creative and we
encourage innovative theoretical and empirical work across all media and
disciplines and in all presentation formats. The following themes can be
taken as indicative but not exhaustive:
Creativity and the creative industries
Creativity in organisation and management
Creativity and new forms of authorship
Creativity, commodification and consumption
Creativity, science and technology (old and new)
Creativity and social identities
Creativity and critical discourses
Creativity and metaphysics
Creativity and performance
Creativity and accounting
Creativity and its histories
Creativity and policy
Creativity and pedagogy
Creativity and mediation
Creativity and sex
The conference organisers invite the submission of abstracts for papers or
panels that will address and engage with these areas of inquiry and
contribute to their expansion.
Proposal submission deadline: 28 September 2001
