Call for Papers: 2001 - The Present of Cinema Studies
A series of Strategic Interdisciplinary Readings in Film
The University of Southampton is inviting participation in
a fortnightly seminar series, which will start Tuesday 13th
March and continue through to December 2001. This series
aims to encourage discourse between those working with
film in whatever disclipline.
We anticipate that a selection of papers will be edited
into a book for publication.
The details of the series are included as a flier in an
attachment which accompanies this message, and are also set
out below in unformatted form. Please forward this message
to anyone else who might be interested in taking part,
either as a speaker, or as a member of the audience. We
would be grateful if you could print and display the flier
on your department noticeboard. A programme of the topics
will follow nearer to the start date.

2001: The Present of Cinema Studies
A Series of Strategic Interdisciplinary Readings in Film
Fortnightly Seminar Series March to December 2001
In 1968 Stanley Kubrick's film saw the year 2001 as the
fantasized future.
Now that we have arrived in the future, where exactly are
we?
And where are we going next?
The purpose of this seminar series is to provide a platform
for those actively engaged in film studies (academic staff,
researchers, postgrads). We would like to hear about your
current working practices, and to find out what theories,
methods and approaches are in use.
This series aims to provide a selection of papers for
publication in book form.
We therefore invite submissions of papers of 20 minutes
duration, preferably to include a brief case study, which
puts the chosen methodology into practice. Pre-organised
panels are welcome.
Examples of approaches/theories might include:
Anthropological, Class, Colonialism, Ethnicity, Exhibition,
Feminism, Gender, Genre, Historical, Linguistic,
Metaphysical, Music, Narrative, Philosophical, Political,
Psychoanalytic, Queer, Reception, Science, Sound,
Spectatorship...
Each seminar will feature 2 to 3 papers followed by a group
discussion.
Send a 200-word abstract to: Karen Brant (e-mail
<[log in to unmask]>), or Jacqueline Furby (e-mail
<[log in to unmask]>), or by post to the English
Department, University of Southampton, Southampton, SO17
1BJ, by 1st February, 2001.
