Dear Ian,
As part of a local authority, Walsall Museum is on the council's intranet.
Obviously this is extremely large so may not be relevant to you, but I
thought I'd send my thoughts in any case.
Firstly there's a problem as not all staff in the council have access to a
computer. As a result, most e-mails are printed out and passed on, which may
end up with fewer pieces of paper, but hardly creates a paperless
environment!
Secondly, a successful intranet seems to be extremely difficult to create.
The intranet here is large, accessed by a lot of people, and provides a
range of information, however the majority of information is also sent out
in printed form; there is no information given on how to post, or on what's
available on the intranet, and so it's not used to it's full potential. If
you are thinking of creating an intranet, I'd suggest you need a lot of
'walk-throughs' to make people aware of what it can offer and extremely easy
methods for everyone to add their own information in a structured and
accessible way.
Hope this is of some help - it's not all doom and gloom as although I've had
to find my own way around, there is access to lots of information, although
I'm sure there's lots I don't need to know that I could always waste my
time on!
