Dear Michael
This is a massive area - I would recommend two or three main things:
- Speak to TASI (they are very helpful)
- Check out the MDA site - they have a range of resources available,
including a detailed list of potential suppliers, with more information and
web links. www.mda.org.uk
- Be very clear on your business requirements before selecting a supplier;
there are a lot of packages out there, some of which are very good at
managing digital images, some of which are more content management tools. It
is rare to find a combination of both.
iBase are a widely used and reputable supplier, as are Gallery Systems,
Systems Simulation, House of Images and Adlib. Depends what you want to do.
We normally would recommend a business analysis exercise to define your
requirements; you can then match this up to what is on offer to find the
best match.

Subject: Image management software
Anybody have any recommendations for image management hardware and software?
We desperately need to organise and manage digital images of our collection
and other items and I'm wondering what would be the best way to achieve
this. A dedicated server appeals to me, with some sort of database of images
and associated metadata. Preferably something with the capability to
automatically add a directory full of images to the database, plus any other
bells and whistles. A nice friendly front-end is essential so that all
interested staff can browse the image base and obtain / link to the required
images from it. All thoughts welcome!
