Dear all,
I am looking into the possibility of researching the issue of virtual
vs. authentic object in the context of museums and the digitisation of
collections.
I have found adequete material on the pros and cons of digitisation and
its scope for museums regarding such things as funding, wider access,
education, etc... but not much about the relative impact digitisation of
collections will have a) on the role of museums and b) on the value of
the authentic object and how the authentic object (I use the term
loosely to mean any 3D object one would recognise in a museum) might
come to be regarded by the wider public post-digitisation.
I am aware of research into the implications of VR in archaeology where
many of these issues have been addressed but I am interested in it from
the point of view of how museums may come to redefine themselves in the
future.
I don't want to reinvent the wheel here, so if anyone knows of any
websites or publications that deal with the complxities of real
vs. virtual in a museum context, then I would be very interested in
hearing from you.
Many thanks in advance for any advice or information.
