Dear Ian
Unfortunately, like many organisations, we have no choice currently other
than to use Outlook :-(
To be clear on the virus situation, it seems to be spreading from
intercepting messages sent out by JISCMAIL and e-mailing those e-mail
addresses that appear in the original message. I would imagine that
JISCMAIL's sophisticated systems (?) would filter out e-mails containing a
virus (???) But it does mean that anyone posting a message to JISCMAIL that
goes out to those with infected systems is likely to get a virussed reply
from several list members. I believe this to be the case as the subject of
the e-mails I have received relate to recent postings to the JISCMAIL
service (e.g. cookies).
Don't be surprised if you now get an odd virussed e-mail or two (or more).
However, its not just posters of message who are likely to receive virussed
e-mails as this virus will search and e-mail itself out to potentially any
other addresses in e-mails on infected machines. This is why I felt I had to
warn the list as it is clearly very virulent. The good news is that the
virus apparently does not do much damage to the machine itself (other than
being a nuisance and spreading itself further - apart from the fact that it
does drop a program onto the infected machine that captures and records
key-strokes, which could clearly cause security issues).
Since this morning, I have received yet another infected e-mail from a
different list-member, making four in 24 hours (and I have received multiple
messages from each of the four people).
So please be very careful and I would strongly recommend the use of
antivirus software that scans incoming mails to prevent infection.
Regards

One obvious way to avoid acquiring BadTrans, and many other viruses, is to
avoid using Outlook or Outlook Express!
As MCG listowner, I haven't seen any MCG messages, as such, which have been
infected. One very obvious clue is the size of the e-mail attachment.
We strongly discourage ANY e-mail attachments on the list so subscribers
should be very suspicious of any posting that is larger than a few
kilobytes.
