Dear museum colleagues
A2A is the English strand in the UK archives network and will make 400,000
catalogue pages for archives dating from the twelfth to the twentieth
centuries and held in national, local and specialist archives available on
the www by March 2002 at <http://www.a2a.pro.gov.uk>. We are now planning
Phase 2 of A2A, which begins in April 2002, and would welcome the
involvement of the museums sector: see the information below.
Feel free to contact me or Meg Sweet (details below) for more information.
Best wishes
Sarah

A2A Phase 2
Planning Workshops, Autumn 2001
Your chance to join the English strand in the UK archives network
Phase 1 of the A2A (Access to Archives) programme will end in March 2002 and
will result in:
* Retroconversion of 400,000 catalogue pages to electronic format, funded in
part by 13 successful consortium applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund
(HLF)
* Free public availability of the resultant electronic catalogue data in the
A2A database at www.a2a.pro.gov.uk
* Return of catalogue data to contributing repositories for local use
A2A Phase 2 begins in April 2002 and will have the following features:
* Two-year timescale to March 2004
* Mounting of 300,000 catalogue pages in the A2A database
* Retroconversion and the possibility of new cataloguing and themed
interpretative web-based projects
The A2A Central Team is holding free planning workshops for A2A Phase 2.
These are your opportunity to find out about:
* The wider A2A framework
* Addressing HLF priorities and criteria
* Presenting clear and accurate budgets
* Tips on bid presentation
Both regional and subject-based projects are sought, as are projects
involving individual repositories or small groups of repositories,
cross-sectoral initiatives and projects led by or in collaboration with
archives users. Participation from archives sectors which were not covered
by A2A Phase 1 is particularly welcome, including those with access to
non-HLF funding. Project themes might include the history of particular
communities, localities or subjects.
Please contact Sarah Flynn (020 8392 5328) or Meg Sweet (020 8392 5315) if
you would like to be involved in A2A Phase 2 but are unsure how to proceed.
Planning workshops for A2A Phase 2 will be held at the National Railway
Museum, York and the Public Record Office, Kew, as follows:
