Dear Ian,
Experience in the Science Museum suggested that there are some very simple
things that can make intranets more used - such as, on every computer,
simply making the intranet the home page shown whenever a browser opens.
Otherwise, lots of users never find it, or forget. More expert ones can
always change the default.
I agree, most useful for central info, personnel policies, phone
directories, staff structures, perhaps an archive of general notices, etc -
avoids make-work otherwise needed for everyone maintaining their current
information.
It's email that really does reduce paper - I saw my actual intray reduce
amazingly over 5 years, tho' the electronic one grew more than
correspondingly. I think less gets printed out.
regards
Suzanne
