Dear All,
In response to the messages from today about enabling access to websites,
could I give a quick mention to the various resources that are also doing
good work in this area, sorry if you've heard all this before:
Web Accessibility Initiative - http://www.w3c.org/WAI - has a full range of
simple guidelines dealing with both physical and intellectual accessibility
Bobby - http://www.cast.org - Bobby is an HTML validator that will check
your website against certain accessibility criteria (particularly for
visibility). It is available free of charge as a download from the website
of CAST - the Centre for Applied and Social Technology.
NOF-digi Technical Standards -
http://www.peoplesnetwork.gov.uk/nof/technicalstandards.html - have been
developed to support the creation of content under the New Opportunities
Fund Digitisation Programme and are full of useful guidance on creating
accessible sites.
RNIB Campaign for Good Web Design -
http://www.rnib.org.uk/digital/welcome.htm - an excellent resource on visual
accessibility online, with links to further information. You can also
contact them for a copy of their free 'Websites that Work' video.
MAGDA - http://www.magda.org.uk - The website of the Museums & Galleries
Disability Association. A new version is currently under construction
(http://www.magda.org.uk/new - comments welcome!) but you can join the MAGDA
email list on the site an receive postings on both general and technological
accessibility in museums.
Hope this is useful!
All the best,
Nick Poole
