Dear all,
As a postgraduate nearing the end of my MA Museum Studies, I was
interested to read the responses to the Museum Web-Guide posting last
week.
Having just designed a website for an interaction/exhibition my
colleagues and myself organised recently, and the positive and
encouraging feedback we have recieved for it, just goes to show that
expensive consultants, designers are not always necessary to create
colourful, interesting and easily accessible websites.
I designed this site simple site free of charge (of course) using our
own graphics and content. As an individual and as a group, we have
realised the potential of having websites for the promotion of museum
activities and to increase access to these activities. I have no formal
background in IT or web design but prefer to do it as a hobby - dare I
say, like a volunteer...
I would like to offer my support to all of those who condemned the
comments of Museum web-guid'ers' and show that it's not all doom and
gloom for the future of museum web design! I would urge any museum
wanting to design a new website or improve an existing one to draw upon
the wealth of expertise that exists within the museum community and not
to feel intimidated by those who unjustly criticise your efforts.
For anyone's interest, our website is at www.todaytomorrow.org.uk
Comments on/off list welcome.
Good luck to all budding museum web designers!
Tehmina.
