We use different approaches in different circumstances. Our archaeological sites
and monuments record is based on parishes. Parishes are also a basic unit for
general local history research in many parts of the country.
for much of our work with local studies photographs and maps we have used a
historic county/vice county approach, in particular because historic editions of
the Ordnance survey were produced on a county sheet basis - I appreciate that
historic counties are not necessarily co-terminous with vice counties.
