The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 6th March 2001 commencing at 6.30
pm at the Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, Clerkenwell, London.
Nearest Tube: Farringdon.
Prof. Peter Enser, President of the IIS will be our speaker:
NEW WAVE DOCUMENTALISTS IN THE MOULD.
The Institute of Information Scientists recently undertook an
'environmental scan' which established a set of assumptions about
conditions in 2005. The changing socio-economic environment highlighted in
that exercise poses a serious challenge to those engaged in fostering the
knowledge and skills appropriate for the next generation of information
professionals.
As a means of meeting that challenge the talk will call for the generation
and continuing professional development of 'new wave documentalists':
information professionals with born-again skills in the 'cat and class' of
digitally integrated content; a mind-set liberated from the traditional
pre-occupation with text; and a skills-set which embraces the creative use
of information and communication technologies.
That way, it will be suggested, lies the means of relieving society of its
worrying misconception that, in future, computer technologists will hold
all the keys to the treasure troves of public and corporate knowledge
assets.
All are welcome to come along for an interesting talk, discussion and free
buffet and an opportunity to network with a group of aspiring 'new-wave
documentalists'.
