EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES
On 9 July 2001 the Council of EURAMES met in Paris. In attendance were
delegates from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Poland, Switzerland &
UK, as well as myself representing MELCOM International.
Among the more important items discussed were:-
1. The First World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES), Mainz
9-12 September 2002. Preparations are well under way for this major event,
which will have the backing and participation of EURAMES, the Middle East
studies associations of France, Germany, Italy, UK & USA, as well as numerous
research institutions in Europe, the Middle East & North America. It will
include many panels, workshops, symposia, etc. on all branches of the
humanities and social sciences. One of them will be a Symposium on the History
of Printing and Publishing in the Countries and Languages of the Middle East,
to be held in the Gutenberg-Museum in Mainz, where there will also be a major
exhibition on the subject. This has previously been announced on
LIS-Middle-East: further details are available from me.
Further information on the World Congress can be found at
http://www.wocmes.de or by E-mail from [log in to unmask]
2. Expansion of EURAMES Info Service. This is a regular free E-mail bulletin of
news and announcements concerning Middle Eastern studies. Further subscribers
are sought: send your E-mail address to [log in to unmask]
3. Reform of EURAMES. A proposal to change the organisation from its present
role as an Association of national and transnational societies into an
association of institutes and centres was not adopted. Among other
disadvantages, it would have removed any direct role for representatives of
librarians. But EURAMES may increase its links with the Mediterranean
Programme of the European University Institute in Florence, from which this
proposal came.
If anyone wants further information on EURAMES, please let me know. It also
worth consulting the website at http://www.hf.uib.no/smi/eurames/eurahome.html
