This photographic exhibition from the British Library looks at how artists
in many different cultures and times have portrayed our health and the
people who keep us in good health - the healing professions.
Drawing on the wide range of books from around the world in the British
Library, the exhibition includes both serious and humorous pictures of
diagnosis and treatment, prevention and cure, and doctors and nurses
themselves.
Highlights include
* Possibly the earliest picture of an Accident and Emergency
Department from a book written over 600 years ago
* Scenes of medieval treatments such as blood-letting and trepanning
* Chinese, Thai and Indian illustrations of healing practices
* An 18th-century cartoon on the evils of drink
* Images of plants and creatures with curative powers from around the
world
* An illustration of Florence Nightingale's hospital ward in the
Crimean War.
From medieval books to 20th century stamps, this colourful and engaging
exhibition is a real picture of health!
