Maureen
I have a lot of dealings with medical students and with
PRHOs and so I might be able to suggest a strategy.
Apologies if you already do this, as I didn't see your
earlier messages
I would get in touch with the Medical School office(s), in
order to find out where they have gone. It's worth
establishing a regular link with your local medical school
librarian(s) too, so that you can 'name names' as soon as
you have a problem. Its a standard rule that
undergraduates (even BM students) can't graduate until they
give back their books.
You can find a list of Medical School Librarians on the
UMSLG page at
http://www.umslg.ac.uk/memblist.html
Also what about tieing in with Trust procedures?
Presumably there is a signing off period (or a signing off
sheet/checklist ) where students have to give back white
coats and badges etc. In future perhaps a formal library
sign-off can be part of the process. Another person to
assist in setting up a sign-off process might be the
Undergraduate Tutor in the Trust. Another opportunity to
reinforce the message about returning books at the end of
the placement, is during the initial initial 'welcome and
rules' session in the Trust, when the students first start
on their placements
I don't think we can trust to trust (as it where). You
have to lock the whole book retrieval process up into a
mechanism. It might sound like hassle, but once you've
established the process, it might pay dividends.
I wonder if it is a breach of data protection to name names
on a public mailing list? What happens if one of the
'names' takes exception to the publicity because they are
in actual fact innocent? The names go into the Jiscmail
archive and are searchable for perpetuity - or until the
archive is taken off.
