Dear Tracey,
We've just looked into this ourselves, for exactly the same reason. One of
the best sources appears to be The Year Ahead 2001, which claims to be a
complete calendar of over 5000 events giving dates, contacts (often the
source of useful free publicity materials) and details. There's a website
for it at www.yearahead.co.uk/ which shows some sample entries.
Unfortunately it costs about £200, but we've been able to refer to a copy in
the local reference library.

Subject: Calendar events.
Hello everyone,
Does anyone know of a source for information on events in the calendar,
such as No Smoking Day, World Aids Day etc. I'm not only interested in
health related events, but they are the only examples that I can think of
at the moment! I would like to put on some displays in the Library based
on some of these, but I usually only find out about them on the day, as
they are not entered in my diary. Any help or advice would be gratefully
received.
I look forward to receiving your replies,
Tracey.
