Information Services Group
Disability Information Event
Heard of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) but still unsure what
it means for your library or information service? The ISG are running a
Disability Information Event to look at the issues and help make things
clearer.
Speakers are Lionel Long, the Manager of UPDATE, Scotland's National
Disability Information Service and Steve Harvey, Project Officer with
SAIF (Scottish Accessible Information Forum).
Lionel will give an overview of disability information, as well as
inform us about the work of UPDATE. UPDATE is a second tier information
service for voluntary and statutory organisations that give information
to people with disabilities. They can offer a range of services from an
on-line database to specialist holiday information and welfare rights
advice. Lionel helped to set up UPDATE and was previously the Training
and Development Worker for DIAL UK, a similar organisation covering
England and Wales.
Steve Harvey works for SAIF based in Glasgow and will be helping us to
look at how to implement the SAIF standards for disability information
and advice provision in Scotland. This will be a practical session
looking at how we can all make our library and information services more
accessible to people with disabilities.
We have built time into the day for ISG members to meet and network - an
important part of any day out and of course there is always the other
day's activities to discuss! (Election Day).
