There was an interesting article in the US publication "US News & World
Report" entitled:
"The modern M.L.S. degree: Library schools today are turning out
webmasters" by Marrisa Melton.
It sheds some light on why today's librarians in the US (and maybe
probably elsewhere like Europe), can command such a high salary,
if they combine traditional library and information science skills, with
basic IT skills such as website development, and
fast track through the ranks.
A link to the article is provided at

Look under "US library and information science schools for 1999. The Top
10 list"
For a sweetner, here is a brief extract from the article I enjoyed:
"Terry Tracy Kemper, a first-year student at the University of
Wisconsin–Madison, expects to command
at least $40,000 at graduation as an ''information architect'' at a
Fortune 500 company–that's the person in
charge of controlling the flow of information inside the company. Kara
Wilhelm, now three years out of graduate
school, earns more than $100,000 collecting business intelligence."
Now thats something!! I wish I was an American!
