We have the leadership of the likes of Barbara Stratton and Sandy Norman at the LA, Toby
Bainton at SCONUL, Teresa Hackett of EBLIDA, all of whom brought about "the most lobbied
directive ever in the history of the EU" resulting in the European Parliament's
Legal Affairs Committee voting in favour of the Common Position of the EU Copyright Directive
with just a few minor amendments. As they say, "Library power does count!"
The huge cost demanded by the publishers of Nature and the BMJ for online access, and the
apparant unending chaos over online access to journals in general is part and parcel of the
same issue. We need the leadership of our professional bodies to act at all levels. We have
shown how effective we are when we unite behind them.
