Subject: Users Meeting!!!
Have your say in the future of OCLC! Attend an open meeting!
In the light of changes in the library environment, OCLC is in the process
of reviewing its governance structure. In particular the concepts of
"membership" and "contribution" are being examined.
OCLC currently defines membership according the contribution where
contribution is defined as the adding of holdings information to WorldCat
via the cataloguing service.
In facilitate this review process the OCLC board has set up an Ad Hoc
Committee on Membership tasked to do the following:
· Review the definition of OCLC "membership"
· Review the definition of "contribution" bearing in mind that OCLC
libraries may not be using the OCLC cataloguing service
· Consider "contribution" in the light of resource sharing activities
Preliminary results from the Ad Hoc Committee have found that changes need
to be made. The following results need to be addressed:
· What is included in the definition of contribution?
· How will any changes effect current and potential members?
· How will voting privileges be distributed?
· How will the composition of Members Council and the elements of
contribution be reviewed and updated?
OCLC Europe, the Middle East & Africa would like to have your input into
this matter.
In order to further this process a users meeting will be held on Friday 7th
December at the Hilton Olympia Hotel, from 11.00 to 13.00.
Members Council delegate Ian Mowat, Librarian, University of Edinburgh, and
member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Membership will facilitate this meeting.
This meeting is open to all OCLC libraries.
To register please contact: Gillian McLeod ([log in to unmask]) at
