Aslib Northern Branch presents
(with apologies for cross-postings)
a Visit the Collections Centre,
Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester
2 pm - 4.30 pm, Wednesday 10 October 2001
The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is striving to
improve intellectual and physical access to its collections of
objects and archives, and this behind-the-scenes visit will
provide an unusual opportunity to look at its holistic approach
to collections management and access.
In September 2001, it will be the first museum to open its
reserve collections to all visitors, with the ultimate objective
of offering complete access via a hybrid of physical and virtual
means. This visit will take in the Collections Centre, with new
purpose-built facilities where visitors can view the treasures
in the museum's stores, and there will also be the chance to
take a sneak preview of the total collection management system,
Ke-Emu.
The museum houses important and rare items reflecting
Manchester's industrial development and scientific achievements,
along with a whole range of fascinating objects made and used in
the region.
The visit is free of charge but please book a place by
contacting Chris Herring or returning the slip below. The
Museum of Science and Industry is situated on Liverpool Road,
Castlefield, Manchester M3.
