Thanks to all those who have continued to respond to my enquiry about
library management systems. I am grateful for your time.
One issue this has been raised is that of referring to the opinions of other
librarians and the care which should be taken in doing this. I hope it is
clear that any summarisation for the list in no way represents a scientific
sample.
My own view is that opinions should never be taken for facts, but they can
be useful in so far as they may prompt you to conduct your own
investigation. As I know all colleagues are aware, it is the opinion of the
library buying the system that counts. This opinion will be based on an
analysis of the system taking into account factors including: size of
library; type of organisation; user profile; budget, and wider
organisational objectives. It follows that a library management system may
be thought unsuitable for a number of reasons that, in fact, have no
reflection on the inherent qualities of that system.
