Subject: Library management systems
I'd just like to thank the very many people who responded to my request for
opinions on library management systems. This has been very useful.
What I didn't mention was that I have used Innopac and Unicorn (and, back in
the day, Libertas). But it is always interesting to hear other people's
views!
I give some highlights below, which may be of interest.
* Heritage: seven replies, nearly all very positive in terms of
reliability, ease of use and level of customer support. Two disadvantages:
it does not support MARC format and there is no overnight batch processing.
* Unicorn: five replies, largely positive in terms of functionality,
but with some criticism (I think justified) of Sirsi's training,
documentation and Americanised terminology.
* OLIB: three people explicitly warned me against buying OLIB, citing
technical problems and lack of navigability.
* Millennium: little response on this one, but far and away the most
expensive system. The best OPAC I have seen.
