United Kingdom Serials Group - Dissertation Awards
The United Kingdom Serials Group is pleased to announce the introduction of
a new sponsorship programme for students writing dissertations in library
and information science.
Two individual awards are on offer to students who produce a dissertation
which explores a particular aspect of the rapidly changing field of
scholarly communication. The two winners will each receive £1,000 cash and
the opportunity to write an article for Serials, the journal
of the UKSG, based on their dissertation. A free place at the Group's annual
conference in Edinburgh in April 2001 completes the award package.
The world of scholarly communication is undergoing major change, as the
impact of the internet is felt by all parties in the information chain.
Existing formats, collection development policies, delivery methods and
commercial models have all been challenged by the development of the
electronic journal and the changes and opportunities it has brought. As
well as being a time of considerable excitement, it is also one of great
frustration as technological infrastructure, user behaviour and library
budgets are often barriers to the potential advantages that can be achieved.
UKSG believes that in this exciting and transitional time, a wealth of
subject-matter is available to any student wishing to write a dissertation
on a serials-related theme.
Examples of some of the topics that could be addressed include:
- Archiving of electronic journals
- Non-commercial models of scholarly communication
- The impact of e-commerce on the subscription industry
- Consortia and their impact on the acquisition of serials
- Licensing issues
- Promotion of e-journals to users
Proposals from interested students should comprise: the research question
posed, a review of the current literature, a description of the methods to
be used and a summary of the deliverables. A maximum of three A4 pages. The
deadline for the submission of proposals is 28 February 2001. A decision on
the two successful submissions will be made by 15
March 2001. Length of the dissertation and completion date should be in line
with the current practice at the institution you belong to.
Completed submissions should be sent by post or e-mail attachment to:
