Marina,
my recent query about mobile phones and user
identification prompted 10 replies, mostly from smaller
sites or college libraries.(Thanks to all who responded)
Most (like us) have a rule that students should always have
their ID card with them, and can otherwise be asked to
leave. If this is written into your rules, you have
something to wave at them.
A couple of libraries who experienced difficulties have
started doing spot checks of ID cards and evicting anyone
who did not have a valid card. Where a problem is reported
in a particular area, rather than highlighting the
offending person or group, an ID card check of the area is
announced, usually prompting those without ID tend to melt
into the background. Any who argue are given the 'broken
record' treatment by one of the more forceful members of
staff.
Obviously more than one staff member needs to be involved
here, to provide safety in numbers, particularly if you are
unable to call upon caretaking staff for backup. Security
does seem to be becoming more of an issue for staff in
libraries and learning centres.
Of course, if your IT terminals are networked and you have
a record of the terminal IPs, your computer centre should
be able to supply details of who was logged in where at a
particular time. We have used this with moderate success in
IT areas, but obviously it doesn't work elsewhere.
Best of luck,
Chris
