We use an NT network with a customised version of IE which is basically a
kiosk version that has been locked down as far as possible to prevent the
user straying beyond the catalogue. This way we can offer the web catalogue
without the user having to log in. If they switch it off or reboot, it
comes back to the catalogue.
The keyboard shortcut ctrl-E however cannot be disabled (so I am told...)
This allows users to get to the search utility and from there to any URL
they can locate by searching. But is has not been misused in this way much,
probably because there are other PCs that legitimate users can use if they
want to so why would they bother? Or possibly they havent discovered it.
A couple of years ago I was looking into this and I put together a web page
which contains all the replies (with names removed) that I received from my
lis-link posting.

It is still there if anyone wants to have a look, but has not been updated
in any way.
