Hi Alex
At Christie Hospital we have developed a system that automates
Inter-Library
Loans processing. The system is Access based and very easy to install
and
operate. The system costs A3500 pounds plus VAT and is suitable for
small to
medium sized libraries. We have distributed this system to over 70
libraries
around the country and provide an in-hours support facility (most
queries
are dealt with within 24 hours).
The system automatically generates Artel standard files that can be
sent
automatically to BL in either email or telnet standards.
The system is Windows based and can be networked or used as a stand
alone
workstation
The is also a user interface that allows users to input their own
requests
that can be screened by the librarian before importing, also saving
time for
the Library staff.
The system comes with a "reference finder" allowing libraries to import
union lists, and a "Report's manager" allows librarian's to gather
numerical
and financial statistics.
This system would alleviate your Library Assistants laborious tasks,
freeing
them up to spend their time more productively.

Subject: British library ART mail requests.
Hi There
I have just been watching one of our Library Assistants
laboriously
typing out and formatting ART mail requests for British
Library stuff.
After a quick chat, she commented that the format of the
messages has to
be perfect or the whole lot comes back.
Has anyone got or looked at writing a Perl ( or other )
script to
automate this process, or even a mail form that they would
be willing to
share ?
I know that many libraries use the BL / ART mail system. If
the process
could be electronically automated a little, I think that we
may be able
to reduce the workload on our library Assistants.
Thanks
