I agree with Liz McDermott that areas of responsibility are just one
of the issues here.
Any guidelines given to students, staff, whoever, must be
consistent and written in plain English! This is particularly
important for advice on the referencing of electronic documents as
this is confusing at the best of times.
Liz also says that it would be 'useful for students to be able to read
references and citations; many are totally confused by what
appears to them to be gibberish at the bottom of the page...'
I couldn't agree more here, and would go further to say that
students (and staff) should be aware of WHY referencing is so
important - ie. finding a potentially brilliant resource, but not being
able to locate it because it is not referenced properly.
As far as responsibility goes, I don't think it matters as long as it is
consistent and has the support of all other staff (in other words it is
everybody's responsibility in one way or another).
