Hello folks,
I know this is about indexing, but bear with me!
I'm interested in hearing from collection managers about suitable
(controlled language or otherwise) indexing languages for describing loca=
l
history material. Obviously, these kinds of resources can be unique
(photographs, letters, one-off publications etc).
I'm currently trying to index a collection of about 600 photographs, whic=
h
will be digitised and searchable using a PC. Metadata is being created fo=
r
the photographs, but assigning suitable subject indexing terms could be
tricky. At the moment location / subject content / name of subject /
photographer etc are the main subject descriptors which currently occur t=
o me.
My thinking so far has been that some kind of controlled language indexin=
g
system like Library Of Congress Subject Headings or Sears might be too
rigid. Perhaps the subject terms will be too broad and maybe unsuitable f=
or
users of a public library?
I'd be very grateful for some advice from other professional colleagues w=
ho
have had to consider these issues and found a solution.
Best wishes to you all,
Scott
