I have been helping a lecturer research the history of the donkey
as a seaside attraction in the UK and now know more than I ever
wanted to about the various Improvement Bills, regulating the hire
of donkeys. I've also exhausted our stock of material on the life
and social customs of the seaside holiday and found various
fascinating snippets.
What I *haven't* found, however, is a
detailed acount of the introduction of the donkey-for-hire in
Brighton and Tunbridge Wells, as a spa resort, in the latter years
of the 18th century.
I don't want to waste my ILL budget on books from my bibliography,
unless I'm fairly cetain they'll be of use. Does anyone know of
either an overview on this topic, which covers the early years, or
a specific book on Brighton, Tunbridge Wells or Brighton which does
more than just mention the rise of the donkey trade?
Thanks.
