Hi all,
I have just relocated to the UK from the US (Houston, Texas.) There are a lot
of positions opening up in the US due to mass retirement of librarians, which
is likely to continue for several years. There are some great opportunities,
especially if you are willing to go almost anywhere. (Some cities such as
Austin, Texas have a huge surplus of qualified librarians and are not paid
well.)
Mass transit is genuinely good only in a few select cities (Washington, DC
being my personal favorite). For the rest it ranges from poor to nonexistent.
Urban sprawl is the norm. Weather ranges from bitterly cold and inhospitable
(Chicago) to unbearably hot and inhospitable (Houston). About teachers and
librarians being respected and considered professional-- that greatly varies
from state to state and between institutions. (Academic librarians fare much
better than public.) State library associations can be a great source of
information. As for the salaries, $50k is quite a different thing in New York
than in Houston, so be sure to investigate how far your money will go (just
like London vs. Coventry).
Good luck!
