Netskills-News Update, Issue 43
NETSKILLS UPDATE * NETSKILLS UPDATE * NETSKILLS UPDATE
Issue: 43
Date: 5 February 2001
>>>From the Netskills Team<<<

In this issue:
1. Learning and Teaching Workshop
2. Dreamweaver (3.0) Workshop
3. Training Module of the Month
4. Up Coming Full Montys
5. New Workshops and Training Materials on the Way

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

1. Learning and Teaching Workshop
With ongoing changes to the way education is managed and delivered there is
a growing interest in online courses, the web as a support tool for
teaching, online assessment and Managed/Virtual Learning Environments.

The Netskills' workshop, 'Using the Internet for Learning and Teaching' is
proving as popular as ever. There are, however, still a few places left on
the Learning and Teaching Workshop at Birkbeck College, London 28th February
2001.

This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who would like
to understand more about how the Internet can be used for teaching and
learning. The workshop aims to introduce and explore some of the tools and
techniques used in Internet-based teaching and participants will have the
opportunity to create some simple web-based materials.

Further details and online booking can be found at:
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/forthcoming.html

2. Dreamweaver (3.0) Workshop Up and Running
Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 offers a range of powerful tools for web site
creation and management. No previous web authoring experience is required
for the workshop. The workshop comprises presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions. Topics covered will include creating a simple web page
using text, tables, images, hyperlinks and incorporating metadata. More
advanced features for formatting a whole site will then be investigated
including style sheets, templates and storing common information as library
items. Navigation bars and the use of frames will be examined and some of
the site management features such as link checking and publishing. The day
will end with an examination of accessibility and design issues. Pages will
be accessed for compatibility with target browsers and a Word HTML page will
be imported and similarly assessed.

There are still a few places left on the workshop scheduled for 23rd March
at Newcastle University.

An online booking form can be found at;
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/forthcoming.html

3. Training Module of the Month
**Web page Images Explored**

Images are an integral part of most web pages. Using images, however, can be
problematic to the uninitiated. This training module is aimed at users of
the web who have had some experience of creating basic web pages and would
like to enhance them by incorporating images.

The module addresses the following topics:

Adding images to web pages
Using border and size attributes with images
Searching for images resources on the web
Creating animated and transparent GIFs
Image formats for the web
Manipulating images and creating thumbnail images
For more information about Netskills training modules visit our training
materials page at:
http://materials.netskills.ac.uk/

4. Up Coming Full Montys
Following the success of previous Full Montys (4 days of workshops with
discounts for attending more than one topic!) we have planned 2 further
events.

University of Newcastle
13th-16th March - Authoring on the World Wide Web, Images and Multimedia for
the Web, Creating Interactive Web Pages, Databases on the Web

Manchester Computing
3rd-6th April - Content Management on the Web, Web Site Development with
Active Server Pages, Server-Side Site Management Techniques, Databases on
the Web

Further details and online booking forms can be found at;
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/forthcoming.html

5. New Workshops and Training Materials on the Way
Netskills are currently developing new topics for their workshop programme
and materials licencing scheme. As well as Dreamweaver described above,
other new topics include the Managed/Virtual Learning Environment
"Blackboard", as a complementary workshop to "WebCT", now popular and well
established in Netskills' portfolio. Existing workshops are also undergoing
changes, with both the Authoring on the Web and Using the Internet for
Learning and Teaching currently being reviewed and updated. Please contact
Netskills if you have suggestions for new topics you would like to see in
our programme.

Further details will be announced in the Netskills News Update as they
became available
