***** With apologies for cross-posting *****
At the beginning of 2000, a group of people, mainly academics and
librarians, had a meeting in Edinburgh to discuss how the study in
Scotland of the book in all its aspects might be promoted. This meeting
decided that a good way forward was to create a very informal body
called the Scottish Group for the Study of the Book, which would exist
at first through a website and bulletin board. If successful in its
aims, it might in future years have a more tangible role.
The National Library of Scotland undertook to organise the setting up of
the bulletin board and the website. Both are now operative: the
bulletin board is at [log in to unmask] and the website is part of the
National Library's new-look site which went live on 1 February 2001.
(This website is of course very useful for a wealth of reasons.) The
particular url of the Group is http://www.nls.uk/professional/sgsb. On
this website you will find out how to join the bulletin board, and find
information about forthcoming events, bodies and individuals in Scotland
involved in the study of the book, as well as a brief history of the
Group and links to other websites.
The website at present is of modest dimensions, and rather
Edinburgh-centric, but the Group wants to represent all Scottish
activity. If you are interested, please join the bulletin board to
disseminate information and promote discussion, and let me know of news
items, forthcoming events, etc. to mount on the website, which I hope to
update very frequently. The success of the Group depends on the
interest and enthusiasm of its members. Many thanks.
Murray Simpson.
