institutional collections about DNER Collections activities
and developments.

               -----------------------

1. National Serials Requirement Survey

The DNER Journals Working Group (JWG) is seeking to improve
the way it consults with the community about their serials
requirements. This will be an ongoing process to inform the
work of the Journals Working Group. By consulting on a
regular basis, and seeking to build on each set of data
collected, it is expected that this will inform future
negotiations.

A Web-based survey form has been created to collect
information on key publishers which are not currently
available as a JISC agreement. In the New Year, site
representatives will be asked to co-ordinate local
responses (including polling academics) to a more extensive
survey of individual title and subject requirements.

The survey wil be available at:
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/dner/journals/survey.html
until December 24th 2001.

              ---------------------------

2. In Brief

 - Wiley Reference Works

A consultation document on Wiley reference works has been
mailed to all HE and FE institutions. The offer is for a
broad range of titles within science, technology and
engineering. For further details, contact Louise Edwards,
JISC Collections Manager ([log in to unmask]).

 - Reuters Business Insight

JISC has endorsed an offer from Reuters for their Business
Insight market reports. The reports cover a number of key
sectors and are international in coverage. For further
details, contact Louise Edwards ([log in to unmask]).

 - Global Business Browser

We will be consulting the FE and HE communities on an offer
from Dun & Bradstreet for the Global Business Browser service.
GBB provides comprehensive business information from a number
of data providers, including Dun & Bradstreet, Euromonitor,
and the Financial Times. Contact Louise Edwards
([log in to unmask]) for further details.

 - Cochrane Library

There has been some uncertainty in some quarters about the
precise nature of the agreement between the JISC and the
National electronic Library for Health (NeLH) to make the
Cochrane Library available to the education community.
Details of the agreement, including the subsidised cost
to institutions, is given at:

http://www.jisc.ac.uk/dner/collections/cochrane.html

For the text of the joint JISC/NeLH press release, please

3. Feature - Collection Description Focus

The CD Focus is a national post, jointly funded for a
twelve-month period (June 2001 - May 2002) by the Joint
Information Systems Committee/Distributed National
Electronic Resource (JISC/DNER), the Research Support
Libraries Programme (RSLP) and the British Library. The
Focus is located at UKOLN and based at the University of
Bath. The CD Focus team at UKOLN are supported by their
partners: the Archives Hub and the mda.

The Focus is working to improve co-ordination on collection
description methods, schemas and tools, with the goal of
ensuring consistency and compatibility of approaches across
projects, disciplines, institutions and sectors. The project
provides support both for projects actively involved in
collection description work and for those investigating or
planning such work.

The Focus is supported and informed by work carried out by
other members of UKOLN, including the work of Andy Powell
on the RSLP collection description schema, and the broader
work on the effective exchange and reuse of information
resources carried out by Paul Miller as Interoperability Focus.

The Focus issues regular news bulletins and holds workshops
and briefing days for practitioners working in the field.
All the work of the Focus is covered on the CD Focus website
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/cd-focus/
