CHARITY COMMISSION

  11 December 2001 PR 64/01
                 'WORKING TOWARDS A WONDER WEB'
            CHARITY COMMISSION RELAUNCHES ITS WEBSITE
The Charity Commission, the organisation responsible for the regulation of
charities in England and Wales, today re-launched its website
(www.charitycommission.gov.uk).
The new site is faster to download, easier to navigate and has a more modern,
cleaner look. The Commission's regional operations manager in Liverpool, Neil
Peterson, managed the re-launch.
'In many ways the old-style site had become a victim of its own success. With
almost three quarters of a million site visitors every month we need to make
sure that our site works efficiently and gives our customers what they need -
the ability to access accurate, relevant and up-to-date information at the touch
of a key,' explained Peterson.
The new site contains a wealth of information about the role and work of the
Charity Commission and has useful links to other organisations including
voluntary sector groups and umbrella bodies. Within seconds of entering the new
site its possible to look at the details of any of the 185,000 charities
registered in England and Wales, together with records of their financial
histories. Visitors can also read the Commission's publications and guidance
papers on-line, together with details of all enquiries completed into charities.
With an increased funding package available from April 2002, the Commission is
committed to reach government-wide targets of being able to conduct all business
on-line by 2005. The re-launched website is the first step in that direction.

confidence in the integrity of charity. It is accountable for its decisions to
the courts and for its efficiency to the Home Secretary. It carries out a wide
range of functions, including the registration, monitoring and support of
charities and the investigation of alleged wrongdoing. There are five
Commissioners, appointed by the Home Secretary.
