a) Reminder - Renewal of CrossFire service
------------------------------------------
This message is applicable to Sites that have returned "Commitment to
Participate" forms to renew their Institution subscriptions to the
CHEST/MDL Agreement for CrossFire Beilstein and Gmelin.
The new agreement started on 1st November 2001 and it was agreed to
allow access to the service from MIMAS to continue to allow a seamlesss
transfer between the old and new agreements to prevent disruption to end
users. This was based on receipt of the Commitment form and on the
understanding that the formal paperwork, the licences, would follow as
soon as possible thereafter.
CHEST is still waiting for over half of the renewal Sites to return the
paperwork and wishes to remind Sites that they need to return these as
soon as possible. The paperwork can be found at
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/mdl/ and two original licences need to
be printed off, completed and returned to CHEST.
This is also advance notification that all Sites that have committed to
renew this agreement will receive an invoice for the first years fee
within the next week or so. These invoices are raised on the basis of
the Commitment form and Purchase Order numbers will be used where they
have been provided. If you have any queries please contact Trevor
Janes, email [log in to unmask]
b) The Cancer Handbook Online
-----------------------------
The recent offers from Nature Publishing Group and CHEST for the
Encylopedia of Life Sciences Online (see
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/els/) and the Encylopedia of Astronomy
and Astrophysics Online (see http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/astronomy/)
are now being followed by an offer to subscribe to The Cancer Handbook
Online. Nature Publishing Group has provided the following information
about The Cancer Handbook:
"... a dynamic new source of reference information encompassing all
areas of cancer research, from the scientific basis of cancer to its
diagnosis and treatment. Over 100 chapters have been specially
commissioned from 200 international contributors to ensure accurate,
comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of all major areas."
This is a three year offer, starting 1st January 2002 and ending 31st

'Macmillan/Nature Publishing/Palgrave' Company Structure:
There has been some confusion about the new structure of Macmillan
Publishers. Nature Publishing Group, formed in October 1999 from
imprints within Macmillan Magazines and the Stockton journals, now
broadens its publishing programme to include the scientific areas of
Macmillan Online Publishing including the scientific areas of Macmillan
Online Publishing and is responsible for specialist journals and
reference materials including 'Encylopedia of Life Sciences Online',
'Encylopedia of Astronomy and Astrophysics Online' and 'The Cancer
Handbook'. Palgrave is the new global brand for Macmillan's academic
publishing. Grove (Dictionary of Art, Dictionary of Music and
Musicians), Macmillan Online Publishing and Palgrave are the three
divisions within Macmillan which "serve learning and scholarship
globally and together they form a major force in academic publishing"
(from press release, 10th July 2001).
