****UKOLUG Welcomes Unification*****
The final step was taken last week at the AGM of The Library
Association as, by an overwhelming majority, Library Association
members gave the go-ahead to unification with the Institute of
Information Scientists.
The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals will
replace The Library Association and the Institute of Information
Scientists on April 1st 2002.
This should not be seen as a merger, but rather as a new
organisation, embodying the best of each of its predecessors, that
will be able to address the needs of both library and information
professionals in an age of electronic, digital and print resources.
UKOLUG is very pleased to be able to announce that it will become a
Special Interest Group (SIG) of the new body. The long discussion
process has given the UKOLUG Management Committee ample time to look
at the range of possibilities open to the Group and we are confident
that assuming our new position within CILIP is the appropriate way
forward. Those members who attended our AGM also voted for this
option.
Chris Armstrong commented, “As Chair, I see this as a strong position
for the Group. I regard our new situation very positively, as
offering a challenge through which we can grow while we continue to
play our important role as a forum and focus for users of electronic
information resources. You will begin to see that, while we have
retained the well-known name of the Group, UKOLUG, we have changed
our ‘strap line’ so as to acknowledge the wider remit we have
gradually assumed over the years. UKOLUG, a CILIP SIG, is ‘advancing
the effective use of electronic information resources’.”
Finally, to repeat categorically what was said at the AGM, existing
members of UKOLUG need not be members of CILIP and the same applies
to future members: UKOLUG can continue to recruit members who are not
CILIP members.
UKOLUG is the national user group for online, CD-ROM and Internet
searchers. The Group lobbies on behalf of its membership, provides
networking opportunities, and organizes meetings, training seminars
and conferences. See how you can take advantage of member services
such as the email discussion list (lis-ukolug) and group
publications, including the highly acclaimed newsletter and an
informative website at http://www.ukolug.org.uk
