Many thanks to all who replied to my recent query about Digimap Home Use and
any problems experienced in ensuring that users deleted data from their home
PCs.
Many respondents were as cautious as we have been about activating home use.
Others felt that users should be have full access to the service, regardless
of any potential problems relating to terms and conditions of use.
EDINA has now assured me that all the institution needs to do is to provide
its users with copies of the necessary forms plus instructions to delete any
Digimap data from home PCs once their coursework has ended. The onus is
then on the individual user to abide by the terms and conditions. The
institution should do its best to ensure that users know of the terms and
conditions, but will not be held accountable for the misdemeanours of the
individual.
As a result, MMU has now activated home use. And I'm sure that many of you
will now be inspired to do the same.
